What I'm building

Version control for high-stakes financial models

Provenance gives investment banks the infrastructure to track, review, and audit every change made to their most critical spreadsheets.

01

GitHub for financial models

Full version history for every spreadsheet. See exactly what changed between versions — cell by cell.

02

Complete audit trail

Track what changed, why it changed, and who changed it. Every edit is logged, timestamped, and attributable.

03

Built for deal teams

Designed for investment banking and private equity workflows. Not a generic tool retrofitted for finance.

Why this matters

The most dangerous un-audited system in finance

Final_v17_REAL.xlsx

Every deal team knows this file. No one knows which version is current, what changed, or who changed it. This is how billion-dollar decisions get made.

Hours wasted weekly

Senior bankers — VPs, Principals, MDs — spend hours manually reviewing models line by line. Time that should go to deal strategy goes to version archaeology.

Millions at risk

A single unnoticed formula error can cascade through an entire model. Deals have blown up, valuations have been wrong, and firms have lost millions from spreadsheet mistakes.

50%

Faster model review

Senior bankers cut review time in half with structured change tracking

Multiple

Zero

Unnoticed errors

Every change is surfaced, attributed, and reviewable before sign-off

Insights

Perspectives on financial infrastructure

Why Excel is the most dangerous un-audited system in finance

Every major financial institution runs on spreadsheets. Yet unlike code, databases, or even email — there's no version control, no audit trail, and no accountability layer. A single misplaced formula can silently cascade through a model, affecting valuations, deal terms, and investment decisions worth millions. The industry has accepted this risk for decades. It shouldn't.

Why AI makes model risk worse, not better

AI copilots can generate formulas faster than analysts can review them. That's the problem. Speed without accountability compounds risk. When an AI-generated formula is wrong, no one knows who authored it, why it was added, or when it changed. Before AI makes financial models faster, the industry needs an infrastructure layer that makes them auditable.

Why version control is the missing layer in finance

Software engineering solved this problem thirty years ago. Every line of code has a history — who wrote it, when, and why. Financial models, which drive decisions orders of magnitude larger, have none of this. The spreadsheet is the last major professional tool without a proper system of record. That gap is where Provenance lives.

The real cost of 'Final_v17_REAL.xlsx'

It's not just a meme — it's a symptom of a broken workflow. When a VP has to spend two hours figuring out which version of a model is current, that's two hours not spent on deal strategy. Multiply that across every analyst, every deal, every quarter. The operational cost of not having version control in finance is staggering and invisible.
